Gustav Klimt: 1862-1918

A founding member and first president of the Vienna Secession. In 1897 Gustav Klimt turned away from his career painting conservative academic commissions to pursue a more meaningful, personal style that had begun to controversially emerge in his art. The Vienna Secession allowed Klimt and the like-minded artists in the group an opportunity to exhibit their modern works and the works of contemporary international painters to a Vienna that had little exposure to modern art. The exhibitions were a hit with the public. Klimt's personal style matured into the famous paintings of his "Golden Phase" which are characterized by flat two- dimensional decorative patterns of paint and gold leaf set against figures with sensuously painted skin.

"Art is a line around your thoughts."- Gustav Klimt
